MICHEL POTAGE

Michel Potage: the precise and poetic stroke of an unpredictable painter

By Olivier Cena

A light-years away from today’s art market standards, the Frenchman embodies a certain idea of romanticism.

So what has became of Michel Potage? This 65-year-old French painter’s oeuvre disappeared from gallery walls a decade or so ago. Occasionally, one of his paintings emerges from an obscure storeroom to feature in a group exhibition bringing together a few works around a more or less convincing theme. But it is always an old painting. Michel Potage no longer paint. His health is too fragile to allow him to do so.

A chaotic poetic space

Michel Potage is an artist conforming to a certain romantic idea of the genre: a (long) period of alcoholism, screwy, offbeat, unpredictable, sometimes delirous, and above all living in a poetic space that is chaotic but of a rare amplitude.
