GASTON PLANET
Gaston Planet (1938-1981) was known for his work as a painter, and for the books he illustrated, such as those by Lionel Ray, Jacques Roubaud and Paul-Louis Rossi. Paul-Louis Rossi has just published an edition of his friend’s unedited literary works, highlighting another facet of his work. Né dans la neige un jour d’hiver brings together poems, aphorisms and meditations, accompanied by drawings. The poetic texts combine an autobiographical journey (his birth in Auvergne, some childhood memories…) with the contemplation of the landscapes where he lived in Beauvoir-sur-Mer. Painting is not absent from his poems, and he has even in a certain way theorized his art. An important part is devoted to dreams, both a detour and a key to the work: “I don’t know about writing, which is terrible for me, because I want and need to write”. This confession justifies the exclusion of these texts, a mistake that has now been rectified.
